    • Journeys to Hope and Healing, an educational podcast

      The Journeys to Hope and Healing podcast is Rowan House Society’s educational tool to increase awareness about domestic violence and abuse in the community and beyond. The podcast talks about various aspects of domestic violence and abuse by interviewing experts across human services like health care professionals, activists, and law professionals. Each episode shares additional resources for the audience to access if required.

    • Bruised Fruit Awareness Campaign

      The Bruised Fruit by Interval House was an awareness campaign to educate the public and reach victims of violence who were isolated or stuck with their abusers during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. The goal of this campaign was to inform women experiencing abuse that Interval House was still open, safe, and welcoming to those who needed it. The campaign used supermarket displays with hidden messages to educate shoppers on intimate partner violence and discreetly provide the shelter’s crisis line and contact information. The campaign also had a video component and an online media presence.

    • Circles of Safety

      Circles of Safety by Justice Options for Women is a collaborative safety planning process. The survivor in need of the safety plan builds a team of 4-7 support members, which may include both personal contacts and community members such as police, family members, and employers. The group is led by a facilitator who is trained in interest-based mediation and facilitation, with a focus on the values and needs of the client. Together, they generate multiple solutions that work for all members of the circle.

    • The Redwood HVAC Staffing

      The Redwood HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) Staffing is a tuition-free program that supports women and 2-spirit, non-binary, and trans people who have been affected by gender-based violence (GBV) to pursue training and a career in the HVAC industry. This program assists survivors to graduate with the skills, industry knowledge, and opportunities needed to secure stable employment and a living wage.

    • Harm Reduction Needs Assessment Project

      The Harm Reduction Needs Assessment project supports Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter to better understand the gaps in shelter services and barriers experienced by diverse communities of survivors who use substances. Ernestine’s has conducted a study that centres the voices of people who have experienced violence and use substances. The study highlights knowledge, experiences, gaps, and barriers that survivors experience. It also includes a list of recommendations for service providers to offer safe services with reduced barriers. Ernestine’s has successfully implemented some of the recommendations to create inclusive services for clients who use substances.

    • Alice House Wellness Monday

      Alice House’s Wellness Monday is a formalized benefit for staff that aims to improve staff mental health and well-being and reduce chances for burnout. It provides dedicated time and opportunity to pause and reflect, develop strategies for well-being, and practise self-care. This time could be used doing yoga, meditation, physical activity, therapy, peer mentorship, going to the beach, or using journals to plan for the month ahead.

    • Safe at Home

      Rowan House Society’s Safe at Home project is an 18-week voluntary program designed to be an alternative approach to helping families experiencing domestic violence and abuse. The Safe at Home program provides the following options for clients: a cool-down facility, individual sessions, and group sessions. The program provides education and awareness, individual case planning, support in developing an accountability plan, and navigation of community resources.

    • MRWS Warm Handoff

      Warm Handoff is a method of communication to help make shelter services trauma-informed and client-centred. A warm handoff happens between any two members of the MRWSA staff and the client/supported person. It includes the supported person as a team member so that they can participate in the conversation about their current case plan and the next steps to reach their goals.

    • NYWS Violence Against Women Language Guide

      The NYWS Violence Against Women Language Guide is a 15-page communication guide for VAW shelter workers, advocates, and anyone interested in gender-based violence. The document guides the reader through definitions and proper usage of commonly used terms like anti-racism, anti-oppression, harm-reduction, and trauma-informed,  and outlines what it means to use them in shelter frontline work, clinical work, and advocacy. It asks the reader to reflect on their use of language and write in a way that is empowering, not harmful, to survivors. The language guide is a working document that reflects the ever-changing violence against women’s work and language.

    • Violence is Preventable video series

      The Violence is Preventable video series  by Victoria Women’s Transition House Society is a series of short video clips developed to reach youth and children during the COVID-19 pandemic. It offers a non-traditional way of sharing information that is engaging and can be accessed by anyone at any time, especially those the shelter cannot reach in person. The videos empower youth by giving them some tools to keep themselves safe from gender-based violence.

    • Safe Pet Program

      Crossroads Resource Centre’s Safe Pet program offers care for the pets of residents and outreach clients. The program ensures that the pets’ basic needs like food, bedding, and health are met. Survivors can either keep their pets with them if there is space in the emergency shelter or they can house them in the on-site kennel facility. As a result of this program, people no longer have to choose between leaving their pets behind or staying in abusive relationships.
