Press Release: Women’s Shelters Canada Welcomes Opportunity to Distribute Federal Funds to VAW Shelters Across the Country

Women’s shelters and transition houses are open during the COVID-19 pandemic to protect women and children fleeing violence. If you or someone you know needs help or wants to speak to a shelter worker, you can find your closest women’s shelter and their crisis line on www.sheltersafe.ca. Remember that you can get advice and safety planning through their crisis line without moving into the shelter.

Shelters and transition homes may be at or over capacity and even more under-resourced during this time. If you are a member of the general public looking to support shelters, we encourage you to make an online financial donation to your local shelter or check their website and social media channels to see if they are accepting donations of food and cleaning or hygiene products. Call their administrative lines sparingly during the pandemic. Remember that the phone numbers listed on Sheltersafe are the 24/7 crisis lines and should not be used for donation enquiries.

We encourage you to safely check in on neighbours, family, and friends during this ever-changing time. Stay safe, and we’ll get through this together.
